Alvin started his career as a counsellor with the Ministry of Defence after completing his military career. He joined an acute-care public hospital as Behavioral Health Consultant and thereafter as a Senior Counsellor at the Addiction Medicine Department (also known as NAMS) in the Institute of Mental Health (IMH). He then joined a private psychological clinic as Principal Counsellor, working closely with local and expatriate professionals.

Since the start of the career switch, Alvin developed a deep interest on the impact of unresolved adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and disturbing life experiences. He spearheaded the importance of trauma-informed approach in counselling at the SAF Counselling Centre, and more importantly during his stint at National Addictions Management Service (NAMS). He conducted talks at public libraries and MOE schools, as well as also presented case studies at conferences in the local and international scene on the impact of early childhood adversities and the importance of addressing it early.

As a counsellor and therapist, Alvin worked closely with the adults and adolescents expressing presenting addictions, trauma and life adversities, as well as other presenting concerns and psychiatric conditions. His sessions included individual, couples, family and group interventions. His work with expatriates included a myriad of relationships, socio-cultural adjustments, impostor syndrome, professional displacement and other work-related matters. His other areas of expertise include performance anxiety, state-trait anxiety, and occupational development.

Alvin also has over 20 years of youth development in various roles – sports coach, uniformed group leader, mentor, and volunteer adult leader. He trained student teams for various competitive events, organized outdoor adventure learning for leadership and resilience development, and led student groups on overseas expeditions. During the period at IMH, he also provided adjunct specialist counselling services to teenagers in institutions presenting with complex issues and potential addiction.

Alvin graduated from the University of Glasgow with a MSc (Psychological Studies, with Merit). He also holds a Master in Counselling from Monash University, and a Bachelor of Engineering (Chemical)(Hons) from the University of Melbourne. Beside being certified in EMDR and Reality therapies, he is certified in Level 2 Emotion Focused Therapy. He is also trained in Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Gestalt Therapy. He is a registered qualified test user with the British Psychological Society.
